Our Note
Two countries share one small island, and a rental car is the only way to actually understand that. The Dutch side has the energy, the boardwalk, the beach clubs and the late tables. Cross the border, which is nothing more than a sign in the road, and the French side slows down completely: bakeries at seven in the morning, long lunches, quiet bays you park above and walk down to. We drive the full loop most days, and we know which side to be on at which hour.
